The dental industry Graduates of dentistry enjoy working with and for people. They are usually self-employed in general dental practices and some work for governmental dental health departments. Some of the job types in dentistry you can expect Dentistry graduates go on to work as dentists and may specialise in the following areas after additional postgraduate studies;
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS)
Oral surgeons specialise in extracting teeth, performing jaw bone and bite corrective surgery and facial reconstruction in trauma cases.
They treat patients both under general anaesthetic and completely conscious.
- Orthodontics
Orthodontists specialise in the correction and straightening of improper dentition and bites. These conditions are usually treated with dental braces and a variety of removable appliances such as plates.
- Endodontics
Endodontists specialise in dentistry that deals with the tooth pulp/nerve. Their main role is removing the nerve from an infected, dead or dying tooth. This is commonly known as Root Canal Treatment.
- Periodontics
Periodontists specialise in the treatment of infected and inflamed gingival tissue(gums). The treatment periodontists provide is the physical (and sometimes surgical) removal of bacterial build up that cause the gums and supportive bone to break down.
- Prosthodontics
Prosthodontics specialise in cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry. This includes porcelain crowns and veneers, bridges and dental implants. Their role can be as basic as doing a simple crown, to helping reconstruct dentition after trauma.
- Paedodontics
Paedodontists specialise in the dentistry devoted to children.
